The News, Explained

On October 22, 2026, Airbnb announced a new booking partnership with American Express. US Amex Card Members can search more than one million selected Airbnb homes through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel app, with card-specific benefits for qualifying prepaid bookings. Source

The route starts in Amex’s Homes tab. After searching by destination and dates, members connect their Amex online account and Airbnb account to complete the reservation with Airbnb. The names on the two accounts must match, and one Airbnb account can be linked to an Amex online account at a time. The terms require full prepayment with a US Consumer or Business Card and require the paying member to stay at the property. The maximum stay through this route is 27 consecutive nights. Some listings offer instant booking; others require the host to accept a reservation request. Once booked, the trip can be viewed through Amex, while host messages, changes and cancellations are handled through Airbnb. The refund shown before cancellation follows the host’s cancellation policy. Card-payment or benefit issues may require Amex support. Source Source

Membership Rewards is Amex’s card-points program. The announced earning rates for eligible prepaid Airbnb stays through the partnership are 5X for Consumer and Business Platinum, 3X for Classic Green, and 2X for other eligible Personal and Business Cards enrolled in the program. Classic Green also retains 3X on eligible travel purchases including direct Airbnb bookings. Other cards’ additional points depend on the Amex booking route, and extra charges such as pet fees or pool heating may be excluded. Source Source Source

Earning those points and using points to pay for the reservation are separate functions. The official FAQ says Membership Rewards Pay with Points is currently unavailable for these Airbnb bookings. The new route lets qualifying purchases earn points, while payment with an existing points balance has its own availability. Source

The Platinum statement-credit benefits add a property condition. Airbnb Luxe consists of premium private homes selected by Airbnb for qualities such as design and quality. Eligible US Consumer and Business Platinum members can use the Lodging Credit for prepaid Luxe bookings of at least two consecutive nights through Amex. A statement credit is an amount credited to the card’s billing account. The limit is up to $300 from January through June and $300 from July through December, for up to $600 per calendar year per Card Account. Source Source

This expands the properties covered by the existing Hotel Credit. Eligible hotel bookings, Luxe bookings and purchases on additional cards on the same Card Account share the limit. Benefits already used in that half-year therefore count when considering the remaining allowance. Delta SkyMiles Platinum is excluded from this benefit. Posting can take up to 90 days, the merchant’s transaction processing determines the applicable period, and refunds, cancellations or modifications may lead to a credit reversal. Source Source

The separate Airbnb Experiences Credit follows a different sequence. A qualifying prepaid Luxe booking made through Amex with an eligible Platinum card must be confirmed to unlock up to $250 per calendar year per Card Account. Eligible Experiences must then be purchased directly on Airbnb’s website or app with the same eligible Card Account by the end of the year of that confirmation. Some Experiences that send customers to an outside partner’s checkout are excluded. Source Source

The distinction between requesting and confirming a booking matters here. If a host declines or does not respond within 24 hours, the Experiences benefit remains locked. After confirmation, the Basic Card Member can check its unlocked status in the Benefits section of their Amex online account. Cancelling all qualifying Luxe bookings in that year can lock the benefit again and reverse Experiences credits already received. A credit for an eligible Experience purchase can take up to eight weeks to post. Source

OYOPICK’s Take

We see value in connecting the place where a stay is discovered with the place where the reservation is managed. A search can start on Amex, changes and cancellations continue on Airbnb, and card benefits follow separate account conditions. If that division is clear on screen, travelers could more easily identify which service should handle a problem.

A useful comparison starts with the property a traveler wants, the stay they already planned and their remaining lodging-credit allowance. The Experiences credit is especially dependent on keeping a confirmed qualifying Luxe reservation. We would like both services to show the benefit’s unlocked status and the consequences of cancellation alongside booking confirmation. That would make the advertised amounts easier to judge against an actual travel plan.
