The News, Explained
Amazon published a guide to its US Amazon Grocery service on November 2. Same-Day Delivery means delivery on the day of the order. Amazon says the service covers more than 2,300 US cities and towns; its stated availability concerns supported US areas. Source
Membership and order value change the delivery fee
The guide says Prime members receive free Same-Day Delivery on orders over $25. Members whose orders do not meet the minimum can choose it for $2.99. Prime is Amazon’s paid membership service. The delivery-fee comparison here does not add the membership price: a zero-dollar delivery fee for an order and the cost of maintaining a membership are separate considerations. Source
For customers without Prime, Amazon lists a $12.99 delivery fee regardless of order size. Membership therefore changes the delivery fee even when shoppers in the same supported area choose the same delivery service. These conditions describe the Amazon Grocery Same-Day Delivery route covered by this guide. Source
For a hypothetical order using the stated rules, a Prime member’s $20 order would incur a $2.99 delivery fee, while a $30 order would have a zero-dollar delivery fee. A nonmember’s $30 order would incur $12.99. This illustration applies the source’s delivery-fee rules. Taxes and membership costs must be considered separately when calculating total spending. Source
Separate Same-Day Delivery from 30-minute delivery
Amazon says shoppers can order fresh groceries and everyday essentials alongside other items eligible for Same-Day Delivery in a single cart. It describes a route for produce, meat, dairy and frozen food that can also accommodate other eligible purchases. Supported areas and item eligibility define the scope. Source
The guide also introduces Amazon Now, which offers delivery in 30 minutes or less in select cities. Read this separately from the Grocery Same-Day Delivery service described above. Amazon Now needs its own availability and service conditions; the Same-Day Delivery fees compared here should not be transferred to that separate service. Source
Read the $25 meal price and free-delivery threshold separately
For Thanksgiving, Amazon describes a $25 ingredient bundle containing an 8-pound frozen Butterball turkey—about 3.6 kilograms—and ingredients for sides and dessert. The guide says the offer is available through November 26 while supplies last. Here, $25 is the bundle’s product price, while “over $25” is the stated threshold for free Prime Same-Day Delivery. Reading the product price and delivery fee separately makes the order cost easier to compare. Source
OYOPICK’s Take
Cost depends first on whether someone already has Prime, how much they typically combine into an order, and whether the service is available in their area. The listed delivery fees show a clear difference between smaller orders and those above the free-delivery threshold. Deciding whether to buy a membership also requires considering order frequency and membership cost. One order’s delivery fee is an incomplete basis for judging a subscription’s value.
A single cart for groceries and other eligible products could simplify the purchasing process. For that convenience to support informed choices, checkout needs to distinguish Same-Day Delivery from Amazon Now, member delivery fees from product discounts, and availability from stock conditions. As service names and promotional numbers multiply, we hope the interface makes the costs that apply to a particular order easier to understand.
