GitHub deprecated Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3.6 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code and Claude Opus 4.7 in Copilot on October 2, 2026. The change covers every GitHub Copilot experience, including Copilot Chat, inline edits, ask and agent modes, and code completions. If a previously selected model has disappeared or an automation names one of these models, this retirement is the first condition to check. Source
Map each retired model to its replacement
GitHub gives a direct migration map. Both Gemini 3.5 Flash and Gemini 3.6 Flash move to Gemini 3.8 Flash, Kimi K2.7 Code moves to Kimi K3, and Claude Opus 4.7 moves to Claude Opus 5.5. These are the alternatives GitHub recommends, but the notice does not promise identical quality, pricing or speed. Re-run representative prompts and coding tasks after switching when the output matters. Source

Separate the user step from the admin step
GitHub says no action is required to remove the deprecated models. An individual who chooses models manually can confirm that a supported option is visible and select the stated alternative. Workflows and integrations that specify a model still need to be updated to a supported one. Start with the model selection used by the current integration instead of guessing an identifier or configuration path that the announcement does not provide. Source
A replacement may not immediately appear for Copilot Enterprise users. An administrator may need to allow the specific model through model policies in Copilot settings. Once the policy is enabled, GitHub says the model appears in the Copilot Chat selector in VS Code and on github.com. When a replacement is missing, checking the organization’s model policy is therefore more useful than starting with an application reinstall. Source
Check the transition in the right order
First separate manual selection from automated dependencies. For manual use, select the replacement and compare it on familiar work. For a workflow or integration with a fixed model, change the setting and verify that the run completes. For an organization account, enable the relevant policy and confirm model visibility in both VS Code and github.com. GitHub directs Enterprise customers with unresolved questions to their account manager. Source
