Cloudflare released Auto Router for AI Gateway in public beta on September 30, 2026. Applications can specify cloudflare/auto as the model, allowing the gateway to choose a model for each task. The idea is to reduce manual model selection across requests with different levels of difficulty. Source
Reading the savings claim
Cloudflare says its internal use through an OpenCode setup saved up to 30% compared with using only frontier models. It also published results from a separate internal knowledge-work evaluation involving simulated tools for email, calendars, files and other tasks. These figures describe Cloudflare’s own tests and comparison choices. They do not establish the same savings for another application or workload. Source
What adopters need to check
A service that depends on one named model should test output quality, latency and spending with its own requests before changing routing. Auto Router may choose different models for different tasks, so previous model-specific expectations need fresh measurement. The feature is a public beta, and cloudflare/auto is the model identifier Cloudflare names for trying it through AI Gateway. Source
