The News, Explained
Google announced changes to links from AI Search to original pages and creators on October 15, 2026. The update concerns experiences including conversational search in AI Mode and AI-generated answer summaries in AI Overviews. It combines stronger links inside answers, wider news displays and tests of new connections. Source
Finding supporting pages and further reading
Inline links attach web addresses to words or phrases in an answer. Google is increasing their presence and showing them higher in responses more frequently, providing a route from a passage to a connected page. Related-article links at the end of some AI responses are also getting thumbnails and a more prominent design. Source
Carousels, horizontally browsable groups of timely articles, are starting to roll out to additional locations and languages globally. They highlight Preferred Sources, the setting for choosing favored publications. The announcement gives no complete list of additional locations or languages or individual Korean rollout date. Source
Official task pages and creator identities are tests
Google plans to test a dedicated section at the top of an AI response for questions where one or two official pages can complete a task or supply specific information. It will explain why each link is useful. This extends existing prominent links for searches aimed at reaching a particular website. Source
This week, Google also began testing clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode. They lead to Search profiles with context about the creator and their broader work. These profile and official-page tests have a different status from the expanding news carousels. Source
OYOPICK’s Take
A link’s position and purpose matter more to readers than its count alone. A link beside a claim starts an evidence trail; an official task page supports getting something done; a creator profile identifies the source. Clearly distinguishing those purposes could help readers continue from an AI answer into original material.
The effect on publisher visits or reader decisions needs evaluation through actual use. Announcing more links establishes neither traffic gains nor answer accuracy. We hope Google makes test availability and link destinations clear while refining how easily readers can reach the original pages they need.
