The News, Explained

Kakao is running an Emoticon Card Draw in the Kakao Emoticon Shop from October 12 through November 2, 2026. The set contains 39 gold, silver and bronze cards based on 13 character properties, including Ddukddak Potato, Manggeureojin Bear and Boss Kang. These are digital event cards that can be saved or shared with friends, not vouchers to purchase the corresponding emoticons. Source

A participant reaches the event page through a Kakao Emoticon channel message or the official @kakao.emoticon Instagram account and presses the card-draw button. Each user can participate once. Kakao’s announcement does not provide odds for the card tiers or a way to select a particular character. Source

Rewards differ by Emoticon Plus subscription status. A non-subscriber receives two character cards and one random free-access voucher lasting seven days, 14 days, one month or one year. A current subscriber receives three character cards instead of a voucher. The headline’s up to one year free therefore describes the longest possible random reward for a non-subscriber, not a benefit given to every participant. Source

A separate sharing event is open to both non-subscribers and current subscribers. Participants capture their card, post it on personal social media with required hashtags including #카카오이모티콘 and #이모티콘카드뽑기, then leave the post URL in a comment on the event page. Kakao says 20 winners will receive one year of Emoticon Plus and will be notified individually through the Kakao Emoticon channel on November 9. Source

Emoticon Plus is a recurring subscription that provides unlimited use of supported KakaoTalk emoticons, automatic suggestions for a conversation and keyword search. The announcement does not state the odds for cards or vouchers, the voucher redemption deadline, whether billing starts automatically after free access, or whether accounts that previously used a trial face additional restrictions. OYOPICK’s Take

The event combines collecting character cards with a subscription trial in one draw. Because non-subscribers receive the access voucher while current subscribers receive one additional card, participants should identify their subscription status before deciding what reward to expect. The announcement gives no probability information that would justify treating the one-year voucher as a typical outcome.

A one-entry limit keeps the promotion from demanding repeated participation, but the possible voucher durations vary widely. Kakao could make the value easier to judge by showing card-tier and voucher odds, redemption deadlines and post-trial billing behavior together on the event page.

The sharing event requires a personal social-media post URL to be submitted in a comment. Clear privacy guidance should help participants choose whether to use a public account and how widely the post will be visible. We hope the event preserves the fun of discovering and sharing characters without turning prize entry into an unexpected expansion of personal exposure.
