The News, Explained
Call of Duty announced the start of Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) campaign early access on its official blog on October 16, 2026. A campaign is the part of a game that follows a story through missions. This benefit gives digital pre-order or pre-purchase customers early access to the entire sixteen-mission campaign. Source
Purchase conditions and named platforms
The eligible products are the Standard Digital Edition and Vault Edition. An edition is a product version of the same game. Reading the offer therefore involves checking both the digital advance-purchase condition and the edition purchased. Source
The named platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement says campaign early access continues until the official October 23 launch. These are the announcement’s stated dates; it does not give separate platform-specific connection times in the text. Source
When modes open and when rewards become usable
The announcement separates the campaign opening now, DMZ early access starting October 20, and the full October 23 launch. Reading the schedule in that order helps distinguish the story offered early as a pre-order benefit from the stages that follow. The campaign follows Park Hyun Jun responding to an invasion across the Korean Peninsula and John Price pursuing the person behind events. Source
Campaign mission completion rewards include playable characters, cosmetic items and experience-point tokens. Experience points track progress in a game, and the tokens are reward items related to those points. The announcement explicitly says these rewards will be available for use in Multiplayer and DMZ upon the full game launch. Earning them is tied to campaign progress; using them in the other modes is tied to the full launch. Source
For example, a player who earns a campaign reward during early access can align its availability in the other modes with the full October 23 launch. The DMZ early-access date and the reward-use date need to be read separately. This explanation connects the two conditions stated in the official announcement. Source
OYOPICK’s Take
We see the benefit less in a countdown to playing a few days earlier than in setting aside time for the story. Offering all sixteen missions before DMZ early access and the full launch could help interested players follow the campaign at their own pace before moving to other modes. Its value depends on how much a player wants that campaign and how they want to spend their time.
The condition tying reward use to the full launch also belongs in the purchase decision. We hope store listings and in-game notices continue to make mode start dates and reward-use dates clear. A staged launch can give players more choice, but realizing that advantage requires an understandable account of what becomes available when.
