The News, Explained

On October 23, 2026, NAVER announced an expansion of its Korean education search, bringing together university, department and admissions information. The university changes went live on October 22; redesigned College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) search is planned for October 27. Students choosing departments and parents helping with course selection can use the service for different decisions. Source

Searching a university and department together can show basic information, admissions tracks, employment rates and tuition for about 200 universities and 7,000 departments, NAVER says. An admissions track is a university’s method and criteria for selecting students. The service organizes material from admissions-office guides, university websites and the ADIGA admissions portal at department level. Source

Elective-subject recommendations have a narrower scope: NAVER uses material from 44 universities that have published recommended subjects. Its example query is “한양대 기계공학과 선택과목,” combining Hanyang University’s mechanical engineering department with “elective subjects.” Distinguishing the roughly 200-university information coverage from the 44-university recommendation coverage helps families understand what material to expect for a particular department. Admissions queries bring together university-published application guides, application dates, competition ratios, school grades and converted scores. NAVER gives examples combining a university or department with its regular or early admissions route. A converted score is calculated using a university’s own criteria, so its meaning depends on the institution and admissions track being compared. Source

NAVER Edu collects school-life, course-selection and admissions information and tools. Its course guide supports planning three years of high-school subjects using departmental recommendations and career interests. Tools for entering self-marked exam results, estimating grades and comparing regular-admission options using university-specific converted scores are planned for November. Self-marking means checking one’s own answers after an exam; the grades produced from that process remain estimates. Source

The October 27 CSAT redesign will adapt information to the period before, during and after the exam. Planned pre-exam information includes schedules, required items and past papers from the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation. Exam-day search will indicate the session in progress. After each subject, AI Briefing will summarize news and admissions-institution analysis; after the exam, search will show estimated grade cutoffs from multiple institutions. A cutoff is the score boundary between grades, and these values are institutional estimates. Source

Education search also includes creators’ short Clip videos and Cafe posts about personal experience. The 2027-academic-year CSAT lounge offers reactions, accounts and encouragement. University admissions documents, institutional forecasts and participants’ experiences serve different purposes. Reading them as separate evidence types helps distinguish material for understanding application requirements from material for learning about other people’s experiences. Source

OYOPICK’s Take

We see potential in helping students make their questions more specific. Moving from a department’s basic information to recommended subjects and then to actual admissions documents could reduce the effort of connecting scattered sources. Clearly showing the 44-university recommendation scope would help students judge where information is available and where further research is needed.

As official data and AI summaries share a screen, we hope source names, applicable academic years and estimate labels remain equally visible. An admissions-office document supports judgments about requirements; a post-exam estimated cutoff is a forecast before results are final. If that distinction is clear, search could help students and families explain the grounds for their choices as well as find information quickly.
