The News, Explained

In its October 19 announcement, NAVER said its Local Growth campaign is expanding beyond individual-tool use and training to bundled support tailored to local businesses. The packages and consulting consider the commercial district, business type and stage of growth. Source

The business categories in the announcement make the intended problems concrete.

  • Restaurants focus on waiting customers and reservations during busy periods.
  • Cafes focus on on-site orders and customer-review data.
  • Stores seeking discovery by new customers look at tools that widen the routes through which people find them. Source

The support combines relevant uses of SmartPlace for store information, the Npay Connect in-store terminal, and NAVER advertising. The announcement describes Npay Connect as connecting payment with regular-customer marketing, reviews and data management. Source

The first Mokpo campaign ran October 16–18 with about 50 cafes, restaurants, bookstores and other small or medium-sized businesses. NAVER reports about 5,800 participants in the three-day promotion and a 27-fold increase in Place coupon uses at participating stores against the same-length period before the campaign. The statistic measures coupon redemptions. Source

In Gwangju, NAVER plans a business meetup on October 30, followed by a campaign involving about 50 shops around Dongmyeong-dong during the October 31–November 1 coffee festival. The meetup is an event for sharing business examples and tool use. Its official recruitment window was October 12–18, so registration had closed by October 19. Attendees are selected separately, and the notice says a lottery may be used if applications exceed capacity. Source Source

Follow-on support involving regional financial institutions remains under consideration. NAVER says loan-guarantee-fee and advertising-consulting support are being discussed with Busan Credit Guarantee Foundation, and it plans to consider support options in later campaign locations. Source

OYOPICK’s Take

We see value in grouping support by business type because it lets owners start with an operating problem rather than a list of product names. A restaurant managing a queue and a store trying to reach new customers may prioritize the same tool list differently. The value of a bundle becomes clearer if consulting is organized around those actual business needs.

We would also examine activity measures such as coupon use separately from revenue and repeat visits. NAVER’s current report says coupon use increased during the promotion. Follow-up information about what happened at participating stores would allow a more concrete assessment of the campaign’s goal of continuing support beyond a one-off event.
