The News, Explained

Samsung Electronics announced updates to Sleep Coaching and Running Coach in the Samsung Health app on October 14, 2026. Sleep Coaching requires less data to begin and will adjust weekly recommendations as a user’s patterns change. Running Coach adds levels for intermediate and advanced users, along with Strava route imports. The features begin rolling out progressively in October, and timing can vary by market, model and software conditions. Source

The starting requirement for Sleep Coaching changes from seven days of data in a month to three days from the past two weeks. Samsung’s detailed requirement specifies at least three tracked days within a seven- to 14-day period. It requires Samsung Health version 6.24 or later paired with a Galaxy smartphone running Android 11 or later. Sleep data can come from the Galaxy Watch4 series or later, Galaxy Fit3 or later, or Galaxy Ring. Source

During setup, the user completes a survey covering sleep regularity, nighttime interruptions, alcohol and caffeine intake, and subjective sleep satisfaction. The app combines those answers with three days of data to assign a Sleep Animal and build a personalized four- to eight-week program. As coaching continues, it adjusts the next week’s recommendations in response to sleep patterns, daily satisfaction and lifestyle changes. Source

A new Sleep Balance graph brings five measures into one pentagon: sleep time, regularity, awake time during the night, sleep satisfaction and Energy Score. Morning messages review the previous night’s data and connect it with weekly and final reports. Energy Score requires health data from a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Ring to be synchronized with Samsung Health. Samsung states that the result is for personal reference and is not intended for medical purposes. Source

Running Coach expands from 10 training tiers to 12. It continues to build a personal plan from a 12-minute running test or previous running data, while the added levels give intermediate and advanced runners higher targets. The update also improves templates for sharing workout records on social platforms. Running Coach requires Android 10 or later, Samsung Health version 6.30.2 or later, a Samsung account, and a Galaxy Watch8 series or later model. Source

Samsung Health will also import saved Strava Routes for running, trail running and cycling. Samsung’s announcement footnote lists South Korea among the places where Strava is unavailable, so readers there should not assume that route imports are included in their local rollout. Availability should be checked in the app and against regional notices. Source

OYOPICK’s Take

Reducing the entry requirement from seven days to three could lower the frustration of starting to track sleep but leaving before the first coaching guidance arrives. Getting more people to begin is different from helping them sustain a habit. Assessing the update will require more than enrollment counts; completion of the four- to eight-week program and follow-through on recommended actions would be more informative.

Adapting weekly guidance from daily records could show change more clearly than an app that repeats the same advice. Sleep satisfaction and Energy Score, however, are not diagnoses. Separating measured data, answers entered by the user and suggested actions in the interface would help people benefit from a wellness tool without overstating what it can establish.

Expanded Running Coach tiers and Strava route imports point toward less duplication across fitness services. South Korea’s exclusion from the stated Strava availability is a material limit for local users. Showing device, app-version and country support before the feature introduction, and updating plans for excluded markets, would make access to the new coaching tools easier to judge.
