The News, Explained
SEGA introduced the start of Year Two for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds in a November 3 PlayStation Blog announcement. CrossWorlds is a racing game in which Sonic and SEGA characters compete using customizable vehicles and items. The update introduces a one-on-one Duel Mode and a Super Slot that strengthens an equipped Gadget. The announcement also describes bonus vehicles offered with particular additional-content products. Duel Mode focuses on racing against one opponent, in contrast to the usual 12-player races. The development team emphasizes the distance between opponents and the way items are used. Its design separates competing through a field of vehicles from concentrating on a single rival. This explanation is grounded in the team’s stated design intent. Source
Gadgets are equipment whose effects players combine when customizing a vehicle. The new Super Slot accepts a one-slot Gadget and enhances the effect of the Gadget placed there. It adds a choice about which effect to strengthen alongside the choice of equipment. The announcement provides no numerical enhancement values, so it does not establish which combinations are strongest or how winning rates might change. Source
The Sega Consoles Pack adds three vehicles inspired by the Genesis, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast. The team says their colors, silhouettes, and button arrangements informed the vehicle designs. The pack is described as bonus content for Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition and Season Pass Two. The new race mechanics and the contents of additional products therefore need to be read separately. The official US PlayStation product listings checked on November 5 show the following PS4 and PS5 options. These are displayed US-dollar prices, rather than conversions of Korean store prices. Two products can carry the same deluxe label and price while including different passes. Source · Source
| US product | Displayed price | Main included content |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $39.99 | Base game |
| Digital Deluxe Edition | $59.99 | Base game, Season Pass, Sonic Prime Character Pack |
| Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition | $59.99 | Base game, Season Pass Two, SEGA Controller Decals Pack, SEGA Consoles Pack |
| Season Pass Two separately | $29.99 | Season Pass Two additional content |
The Year Two deluxe listing explicitly tells owners of the existing Digital Deluxe Edition to buy only Season Pass Two. Its stated reason is that the new bundle already contains the base game and would count as a duplicate purchase. This provides a concrete distinction between owning the game and buying its additional pass. The separate Season Pass Two listing displays a US price of $29.99. Source · Source
The same product description says PS4 owners can obtain the digital PS5 version at no additional cost. Owners of a PS4 disc must insert it into a PS5 whenever downloading or playing the digital PS5 version. A disc-free PS5 Digital Edition cannot provide this upgrade from a PS4 disc. Whether the game is already owned and whether that copy is digital or on disc both matter to the purchase decision. Source
A pass also combines content with different release dates. Season Pass Two lists the Godzilla Escape course and three vehicles in the Godzilla Pack for November 3. It schedules the EVANGELION Pack for January 2027 and Virtual Sanrio Puroland Pack for the second quarter of 2027. These future packs need to be distinguished from content already listed for release. A pass here means a product bundling additional content; the future dates are the schedule stated in that product listing. Source
Play requirements are another separate condition. The US PS4 and PS5 product page requires PlayStation Plus and a PlayStation account for online features, and also describes offline modes. That general listing does not establish every online or offline option within Duel Mode itself. The price and edition comparison in this article is limited to the verified US PlayStation products. OYOPICK’s Take
The most useful distinction in this announcement is between a new way to race and a new way to buy a bundle. Duel Mode concerns distance and item decisions against one rival; choosing a product concerns whether someone owns the base game and which pass they want. In particular, the two deluxe options displayed at $59.99 include different passes. Reading Year Two together with the actual contents can help reduce confusion about purchasing a game someone already owns. Source · Source
A new mode and equipment slot offer a promising way to add choices to a familiar racing game. Whether enhancing a Gadget actually supports more varied combinations will depend on play experience and subsequent balancing. Observing which equipment players select and how races change would provide a more concrete basis for judging how far the team’s intended expansion of strategy has been realized. Source
