The News, Explained
Spotify began rolling out paid podcast Memberships in 34 markets on October 20, 2026. The initial list includes the US, UK, Hong Kong and Singapore; Korea is outside it. The help page applies that market list to creators and fans. Source Source
Monthly benefits chosen by each show
Free and Premium users in supported markets can view and join a show’s membership. Creators choose benefits such as exclusive audio or video, bonus episodes, early access and fewer ads. Source
Setup supports up to three tiers with different prices and benefits. In a hypothetical offering, a basic tier could include bonus episodes while a higher tier adds extended versions. Fans would compare the extra content with the price difference. Source
The fewer-ads benefit has a defined scope. When a creator enables automatic removal, eligible members can hear episodes without Spotify-inserted ads on Spotify; Sponsorships remain. The benefits selected by the particular show determine the offer. Source
New-show requirements and existing subscribers
The announcement covers eligible shows hosted on Spotify for Creators or Megaphone. Hosting is the service that stores and distributes episode files. Spotify for Creators requires hosting there, a supported country or region, and all of these thresholds: Source Source
- At least three published episodes
- At least 100 unique Spotify listeners or viewers in the previous 30 days
- At least 100 Spotify consumption hours in the previous 30 days
Consumption hours combine listening and viewing time across the audience. The setup guide applies the updated criteria to shows created starting October 20. Shows that previously used Podcast Subscriptions retain eligibility for Memberships. Source Source
From a revenue share to a payout
Spotify advertises a 90% creator revenue share. Its fee guide specifies a 10% platform fee deducted from net earnings, including payment processing, foreign exchange and payout fees. Applicable taxes may be included in the member’s price or added on top; taxes and exchange rates affect the amount paid out. Source Source
Migrated legacy Podcast Subscriptions retain a 5.5% processing fee plus applicable foreign exchange fees of 0.8–1.6% until the subscriber cancels. Creators therefore need to distinguish new membership fees from that exception. Exportable member contact details are limited to fans who choose to share them. Source Source
OYOPICK’s Take
Choosing benefits within a show could broaden the ways fans support creators regularly. The useful comparison is what each tier delivers and how often. Creators who build tiers around content they can keep supplying may find it easier to align their promises with the member experience.
Markets and payout conditions also shape this launch’s practical value. Korean readers remain outside its initial availability, while creators in supported markets need taxes and legacy exceptions to make the revenue share useful for planning. If availability expands, we hope clear benefit descriptions and accurate access information keep pace.
