The News, Explained

Spotify launched its new native Audi app on October 21, 2026. A native app runs inside the vehicle’s infotainment system, which connects its screens, audio and other functions. Spotify says that after signing in, playback does not require keeping a phone paired or tethered to the car. Source Source

Model names, model year and equipment

Audi specifies supported newer model-year-2026 vehicles built on PPE, its electric-vehicle platform, and PPC, its combustion-vehicle platform. A platform is a shared engineering foundation. The eligible models include the A6 e-tron, Q6 e-tron, A5, Q5 and A6. Q7 and Q9 availability follows their respective market launches. Source Source

Distribution is through the vehicle’s Audi Application Store. Audi announces 47 markets, with compatibility depending on model, equipment and software configuration. A model name therefore needs to be read alongside those conditions to assess an individual vehicle. Source

The app download is free and supports Spotify Free and paid Premium accounts. Spotify’s footnote says an Audi connect package may be required. Download cost, the Spotify plan and the vehicle’s connectivity package are separate conditions. Source Source

The device used to sign in and the one playing music

Install or update Spotify in the supported vehicle’s store and open it on the car’s display. A phone or personal device can scan the displayed QR code, or enter the displayed code on Spotify’s pairing page. A personal device helps with sign-in; subsequent playback runs in the vehicle. Source

Features change with the vehicle’s state. In motion, video and real-time lyrics are hidden from the center MMI display, and sign-in and settings are unavailable. When parked, the center display opens video, lyrics and expanded browsing. Supported voice controls, including “Hey Audi” and Spotify DJ, are designed to remain available while driving. On equipped vehicles, a separate front-passenger display can retain supported video and lyrics features in motion. Passengers can also scan a QR code to join Spotify Jam and contribute songs. Center-display and passenger-display conditions need separate consideration. Source Source

App access and individual feature requirements

DJ selects music around a listener’s taste and lets requests shape the listening flow. Its help page specifies Premium and a limited set of languages. Jam lets people add songs to a shared queue: the list of tracks to play next. Source Source

Starting and hosting a Jam requires Premium. Free listeners can join an in-person Jam hosted by a Premium user and add songs. Free-account access to the car app should therefore be distinguished from DJ access and Jam hosting. Source Source Source

OYOPICK’s Take

The practical convenience is that the vehicle becomes the playback device. After sign-in, there is less need to keep a phone connected as the player, while passengers can participate through supported displays and a shared queue. We would assess that value against the particular car’s equipment, connectivity and desired Spotify features.

Restricting the center display in motion and expanding it when parked is a concrete design change. Its effects on usability and driver attention require separate evaluation. As support expands, we hope store and feature screens clearly present model-year, equipment and account conditions, making each car’s capabilities easier to understand.
