The News, Explained
On November 5, Google announced that its Vids editor could make new clips with Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash. A clip is a short scene you can add to the video you are editing. In Create, you describe the scene in words and set the length from 3 to 15 seconds. The separate Animate option starts with an uploaded JPG or PNG photo and adds movement. Google’s help page gives that option a range of 3 to 10 seconds. Source Source Source
Suppose you want to show a product and add motion to the shot you already have. Animate fits that job. If you need a new scene with the same product against a different backdrop, Create lets you describe the setting and motion and add the product photo as a reference. The help page says Create accepts up to seven reference images. Once you insert the result, you can adjust its timing on its own track in the editor. Source
Google’s rollout notice lists personal Google accounts and eligible Workspace editions. It says both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains began receiving the feature on November 5, with one to three days for it to appear. The free usage figures are expressed differently across Google’s documents. The product announcement describes up to three 15-second videos per month at no cost. The personal account guide lists 60 seconds per month for AI clips. The documents do not establish whether those figures draw from the same allowance or are separate. Source Source Source
OYOPICK’s Take
Decide what the shot needs to show before choosing the longest clip. For a product video, the edit can help you decide whether you need a new 12-second scene or just a few seconds of motion on a photo before cutting to real footage. If a logo or the product’s exact shape matters, keep the original photo in the project and look for changes to those details in any scene generated from references. More control over duration gives you more room to decide exactly where a generated shot belongs. Source Source
