The News, Explained

LG Uplus is gradually changing AI search in its unified customer app U+one from an answer-and-navigation feature into an AI Agent that completes supported tasks. U+one lets customers check plans and billing information and explore or activate roaming and add-on services. In this announcement, an agent does more than answer a question and point to another screen: it uses customer information to make a recommendation and, after confirmation, carry out a supported action. The first deployed functions are the Bill Payment Agent and Roaming Agent. The payment agent launched in August 2026, followed by the roaming agent in September. Within the conversation, a customer can inspect charges and reasons for a change, pay an unpaid bill, or receive a roaming recommendation and sign up without navigating through separate menus. The Bill Payment Agent shows the current charge, unpaid balance and discounts. When the total changes from the previous month, it analyzes major contributors such as roaming, add-on services, mobile payments and device installments. Before payment, U+one shows the action again for final approval and warns about possible duplicate payment. LG Uplus says the AI does not pay without confirmation and that each processing step is recorded so the cause can be traced if a problem occurs. Source

The Roaming Agent asks about destination, travel dates and expected data use before recommending a plan. After reviewing the recommendation, the customer can activate it in the same conversation and view travel tips, local-payment information, plan benefits and post-trip roaming charges. LG Uplus says the sign-up conversion rate among customers who received an agent recommendation was about twice the rate of its earlier AI-search flow, which linked people to an app screen. The release does not provide the sample size or measurement period for this company-reported comparison. Source

A Store Guide Agent is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. It is intended to recommend nearby stores using customer location and provide map, directions and phone options. From 2027, LG Uplus plans to expand conversational agents across more telecom services and strengthen personalization based on usage and previous conversations, along with multilingual and voice functions. The store guide and wider expansion are plans, unlike the payment and roaming functions already available. Source

OYOPICK’s Take

The important shift is from telling a customer where to find a telecom menu to completing an approved task. Explaining a bill and then taking payment, or asking about a trip and then activating roaming, could remove several navigation steps. Requiring final confirmation and keeping a processing record are especially important controls when an AI can trigger a financial or service change.

A higher sign-up conversion rate does not by itself establish recommendation quality. Rates of unsuitable recommendations, cancellations or changes, failed payments and follow-up support contacts would help customers judge convenience alongside accuracy. As store guidance and personalization expand, U+one should also show which usage history and previous conversations shaped a recommendation and let people inspect or clear that memory.

A conversational path could make telecom tasks more accessible to people who struggle with complex apps. For multilingual and voice support to deliver that benefit, LG Uplus will need clear language coverage, a fallback when speech recognition fails, and visible routes to a person or to cancel an action. An agent earns trust when it expands human choice with understandable reasons and reversible execution rather than making decisions opaque.
