The News, Explained
Microsoft outlined improvements for Windows 11 PCs with 8GB of RAM on November 3. RAM is the working space that holds active apps and data. The changes aim to keep more work there and prioritize the interactions a user is asking for immediately. Source
Microsoft directs users to Windows 11 version 26H2, build 26300.9818 or later. A build identifies a specific Windows release. In Settings > Windows Update, it recommends enabling the option to receive the latest updates as soon as available, then checking for updates. Edge, Microsoft 365 and Teams also need to stay current: some improvements arrive through app updates or Microsoft Store. The footnotes caution that rollout timing can vary by device and region. Windows uses spare RAM to keep useful apps and data ready, reclaiming or reprioritizing it as needs change. Microsoft has tuned compression, which stores less-active data in a smaller form within RAM, and the movement of data to and from slower storage for 8GB PCs. It says this can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory. The change improves how the existing physical capacity is used. Source
The multitasking result has specific conditions. Microsoft tested the same HP OmniBook 3 with 8GB RAM and an eight-core Snapdragon X Plus, comparing January 2026 build 26200.7623 with later build 26200.9445. Its internal sequence opened 20 Edge tabs, a 4K video, large Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, Outlook and File Explorer, keeping earlier items open. Microsoft reports that this workflow completed up to 40% faster. Its footnotes limit that measurement to the tested configuration and scenario. OYOPICK has not independently tested the result. Source
Windows also briefly prioritizes requested interactions, such as opening Start or Settings, while backing off background indexing. Another improvement connects directly to Edge when it is already running in the background. That Edge change requires Windows build 26300.9818 or later and Edge 150 or later. Source
On PCs with 8GB or less, Widgets loads when opened. Edge now puts inactive tabs to sleep after 15 minutes by default, down from two hours. Microsoft says Teams can enable Efficiency Mode by default on 8GB PCs and adjust camera resolution during meetings to preserve processor capacity for audio. Source
Microsoft says demanding 3D modeling, advanced video editing and large-scale data processing benefit from 16GB or more. Further work to share components across Search and Widgets, and across OneDrive and Photos, is described as a plan for the coming months. That work belongs alongside the roadmap, separately from improvements available today. Source
OYOPICK’s Take
For an existing 8GB PC owner, useful questions are how often returning apps reload and whether routine controls make them wait. Those are the experiences the changes target. Checking both Windows and app versions can help establish whether the machine meets the stated requirements.
A purchase or replacement decision needs more than one test percentage. Microsoft also emphasizes workload and the complete PC configuration. For light documents and browsing, it is worth examining repeated everyday tasks after updating. Large editing projects or several demanding apps running together still call for separate consideration of memory capacity.
Reducing software overhead could make existing devices more comfortable to use for longer. We hope Microsoft keeps publishing clear device and app-version rollout information, along with evidence showing how specific test gains carry over to different workloads.
