The News, Explained

On November 5, Spotify announced that passengers on some United flights could connect their own Spotify accounts to the seatback display. The existing onboard channel plays a selection picked by Spotify. With the new feature, passengers can open their own library, find saved playlists and see personal recommendations. Free and Premium accounts can both connect; playback features vary by plan and market. Source

The phone and the seat screen have different jobs. On a flight offering the feature, connect your phone to the United Wi‑Fi network, open the Spotify tile on the seatback and scan its QR code with the phone’s camera. Confirm the connection on the phone. If you’re already signed in to Spotify, that account connects; any sign-in or signup also happens on the phone. Spotify says passengers can use the seatback feature without a Wi‑Fi pass or a login to United’s MileagePlus loyalty program. Source

After connecting, you can choose content on the touchscreen or use the phone as a remote. Audio continues if you switch to the flight map. Spotify says the account signs out automatically at the end of the flight and the screen resets before the next passengers board. You can also sign out yourself from the Spotify app on the seatback during the flight. Source

Treat onboard internet and seatback access as separate checks. Spotify is rolling the feature out on United planes equipped with Starlink satellite internet, with expansion to more aircraft through 2027. United’s tracker can tell you whether your flight has Starlink Wi‑Fi up to three days before departure. That result is about the network; connecting your account requires the new Spotify feature on the seatback. Spotify says the existing free onboard channel is still available when personal account access isn’t offered. Source Source

OYOPICK’s Take

On a long flight, continuing something you’ve already started could spare you from looking for something new in the onboard catalog. On a shared screen, knowing when an account is disconnected matters as much as knowing how to connect it. Spotify describes signing in on the phone and resetting the screen after the flight. We’d also like to see a clear sign on both the phone and the seatback when a passenger signs out manually. Listing Wi‑Fi and personal account access separately in booking or boarding information would help travelers know whether they can expect to pick up where they left off.
