The News, Explained

New Blood Interactive introduced the launch and production of Tenebris Somnia through Xbox Wire on October 16, 2026. The survival-horror game uses pixel graphics for playable sequences and footage of actors in real locations for parts of its storytelling. The announcement says it is available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Source

Connecting what players control and what they watch

Survival horror involves facing enemies, solving puzzles and following a story with limited resources. This game follows Julia, whose disturbing nightmares about her ex-boyfriend lead her to visit his apartment. Andrés Borghi and Saibot Studios created the game, with New Blood Interactive as publisher. Source

The filmed material appears in cutscenes: sequences that present a game’s story. The publisher says these scenes are directly connected to gameplay. A scene may end by putting the player into an enemy encounter, or begin just after an encounter. The publisher describes that shifting boundary as a way to make the next moment harder to predict and sustain suspense. Source

Matching filmed locations to pixel spaces

The film sets needed to match the locations inside the game. The publisher says this required planning, physical set dressing and CGI. CGI means computer-generated imagery. The production combined prepared spaces and props with computer imagery to construct the connections between scenes. Source

Monster effects involved masks molded from performers’ faces and prosthetic makeup: attached pieces and makeup that change the appearance of skin or body shapes. The publisher says each makeup application took hours. It also reports that the game’s pixel art and animation were drawn by hand. Source

New Blood says production took nearly four years and that no generative AI was used at any point. Generative AI refers to AI that produces new material such as text or images. These production details and policies come from the publisher’s own contributed account. Source

The scope of this Xbox launch announcement

The named platforms are Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. The announcement also says Xbox Play Anywhere allows console and PC play at no additional cost. That availability statement is framed around these two platforms and Xbox Play Anywhere. Source

OYOPICK’s Take

We are more interested in whether the two visual modes connect the same spaces and events than in the resolution of the filmed footage. The need to match film sets to game locations identifies a concrete problem the production had to solve. If transitions maintain the story’s flow while leaving players able to understand their next action, pixel graphics and live action could each contribute their strengths.

The publisher’s commitment to hand-produced work alone is too little to judge the finished playing experience. We hope the work invested in makeup, filming and pixel art carries beyond the impact of individual shots into a coherent relationship between play and story. How convincingly that connection works remains a question for assessments based on playing the game.
